November’s Juunishi ”亥” (i) — A Symbol of Strength and Health

November’s Juunishi ”亥” (i) — A Symbol of Strength and Health

In Japan, the traditional calendar system called the Juunishi (the Twelve Zodiac Animals) has been used for centuries to represent years, months, directions, and even hours. Originating in ancient China, each of the twelve divisions is assigned an animal that symbolizes the seasons, human traits, and other aspects of life.
November corresponds to the "十二支" (Juunishi) sign "亥" (i), represented by the wild boar (inoshishi).

The Meaning of “亥”(i)

The character “亥” (i) originally depicted a seed enclosed in a container, symbolizing hidden strength and the nurturing of new life.
In the "十二支" (Juunishi) , the boar represents bravery, action, and protection against illness, making it a symbol of vitality and resilience.

A common Japanese expression associated with this zodiac sign is “Chototsu-Mōshin (猪突猛進)”, which means “charging forward like a boar.” It conveys a sense of boldness and decisive action — reflecting the boar’s energetic and straightforward nature.

Ikedaya Exclusive Inden Boar Pattern

In Japan, it is customary to wear or carry items featuring the "十二支" (Juunishi) animal of one’s birth year as a protective charm. Many still cherish small accessories or decorations with "干支"(Eto) motifs for good luck and protection.

One traditional craft that embodies these prayers and wishes is Kōshū Inden, a technique of painting auspicious patterns in lacquer on soft deerskin. Passed down for centuries, it was historically used for armor and personal adornments, and is admired for its distinct combination of strength and beauty.

Ikedaya offers a limited series of Inden items featuring the "十二支" (Juunishi) animals. The "亥" (i) pattern combines the animal’s figure with the “亥” character as part of the design. Using layers of lacquer on deerskin, the pattern expresses both the boar’s vital energy and its quiet inner strength.

The "亥"(i) patterned Inden items are perfect as personal charms or as thoughtful gifts for those born in the year of the boar.
