October’s Juunishi “戌” (Inu) — A Symbol of Loyalty and Protection
The twelve zodiac signs, or Juunishi, are part of Japan’s traditional calendar system, originally used as a guide for agricultural activities and seasonal changes. Today, the "十二支" (Juunishi) are still a beloved part of daily life, appearing on New Year’s cards, ornaments, and other items. The "十二支" (Juunishi) sign for October is “戌” (Inu).

The “戌” (Inu) faces are not realistic depictions of the dog, but are modeled after traditional Japanese folk toys called hariko no inu (papier-mâché dogs).
Hariko no inu are simple yet charming paper-mâché figurines that have been used since the Edo period as talismans for protection and safe childbirth.
With their round eyes, large ears, and exaggerated patterns, these dogs may not look like real dogs to the untrained eye, but in Japan they are widely loved as symbols that protect homes and children.
Uchide no Kozuchi (Lucky Mallet):A legendary Japanese treasure said to bring good fortune and wealth when shaken.
Denden Drum (Japanese Hand Drum):A traditional children's toy used to pray for healthy growth and well-being.
Ogi (Japanese Folding Fan):Its spreading shape symbolizes future development and prosperity.
Shobu (Iris):A plant believed to ward off evil and ensure good health; traditionally used during the Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day) festival.
Kiku (Chrysanthemum):Symbolizes longevity and nobility; valued also for its medicinal properties.
As a Protective Charm Gift
The “戌” (Inu) symbolizes protection and safety, making it a meaningful gift for travelers or those starting a new chapter in life. It is also a special item for dog lovers or people born in the Year of the “戌” (Inu), allowing them to feel a personal connection to their "干支" (Eto). The subdued elegance of Inden leather complements both traditional Japanese and Western styles, ensuring long-lasting enjoyment.
