Big News: Ikedaya Ginza Reopens as Ikedaya Shinjuku!

Happy New Year! We hope that 2026 brings peace, joy, and success to you all.

The Junishi for 2026: Uma (The Horse)

In Japan, the start of a new year is traditionally marked by discussions of the Junishi (Japanese Zodiac). This ancient system, originating from China, has long been used to denote years, months, directions, and time. It cycles through 12 animals, beginning with the Rat (子:Ne) and ending with the Boar (亥:I).

The zodiac sign for 2026 is the Uma (Horse). While the standard Japanese character for "horse" is "馬", the specific character "午" is used when referring to the calendar or zodiac sign.

The horse is a symbol of forward momentum and vitality. In Japan, motifs featuring a horse facing left are particularly cherished as charms believed to bring good luck.

Ikedaya Limited-Edition "Uma" Pattern Accessories

To celebrate the new year, Ikedaya offers Koshu Inden items featuring the zodiac motif.
