Walking Through Winter in Japan: Regional Climates and the Durability of Ikedaya Randoseru

Walking Through Winter in Japan: Regional Climates and the Durability of Ikedaya Randoseru

The Many Faces of Winter in Japan

Because Japan stretches from north to south, winter climates vary dramatically across the country. In the north, regions like Hokkaido and Tohoku are covered in deep snow, while the southern areas such as Kyushu and Okinawa remain relatively mild, rarely seeing snow at all.

Ocean currents also play a significant role. Areas influenced by the warm Kuroshio Current enjoy mild, comfortable winters, whereas areas affected by the cold Oyashio Current experience harsher winds and heavy snowfall. Japan’s winters, therefore, can look completely different depending on the region.

Winter in Shizuoka: Protected by Warm Currents

Shizuoka Prefecture, home to Ikedaya's headquarters, also reflects this geographical diversity. The southern part of Shizuoka City, where our main office and Shizuoka Store are located, faces the Pacific Ocean and is warmed by the Kuroshio current, so snow is extremely rare.

On very rare occasions, snow accumulated on Mt. Fuji or surrounding mountains is carried into the city by strong winds, a phenomenon poetically called Kazahana (wind flowers). Even these light flurries attract attention, with many locals taking photos and news outlets covering the event. This excitement over a little snow is a winter scene unique to the mild climate of Shizuoka.

Ikedaya Randoseru: Trusted Even in Snowy Regions

In contrast, children in snowy regions such as Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Hokuriku face daily winter commutes over icy roads and through deep snow. In such conditions, the water resistance, comfort, and durability of a school backpack are essential.

Ikedaya Randoseru are built to withstand both rain and snow. Adjustable shoulder straps provide a secure, comfortable fit even when children are wearing thick winter coats. Designed for durability and comfort, these backpacks help ensure a safe journey to school even on snowy days.

The Japanese Culture of Walking to School

Many elementary school students in Japan walk to school in groups, regardless of season or weather. Ikedaya Randoseru are crafted in Japan with these daily journeys in mind, balancing durability with ease of use. No matter the region or weather, Ikedaya Randoseru continue to support children on their daily journeys.
