January’s Junishi Motif: The "Ushi" (Ox) Inden – A Symbol of Diligence and Inner Strength
In Japan, the Juni-shi (Twelve Zodiac Signs) system has been used for centuries to mark years, directions, and even time. Originating in ancient China, this system assigns an animal to each of the twelve divisions, symbolically representing the changing seasons and aspects of human nature.

The Junishi for January is the Ushi (Ox). While the standard Kanji character for the animal itself is "牛", the specific character "丑" is used when referring to the calendar or zodiac sign.
The Meaning of Ushi: Steady Effort and Inner Strength
Originally, the Junishi characters represented natural cycles and changes rather than animals. The character "丑" (Ushi) conveys the idea of "being tightly bound and storing energy within." It symbolizes the time when seeds lie dormant beneath the frozen winter soil, quietly gathering strength before sprouting in spring.

This concept naturally aligns with the behavior of the ox, an animal essential for agriculture. Oxen move slowly but steadily, pressing firmly into the earth as they work. Because of this association, the Ushi has become a lucky symbol of diligence, steady progress, and efforts that bear fruit, inspiring strength to achieve new goals.
Ikedaya Original "Ushi" Pattern Inden Design
Ikedaya’s limited-edition Ushi-pattern Inden combines the Kanji character with ox motifs. The design features front and rear-view illustrations of the ox, with the character “丑” arranged to resemble a fence around the images.

The Charm of Traditional Koshu Inden
Koshu Inden is a beautiful traditional Japanese craft in which patterns are drawn with Urushi (natural lacquer) on soft, supple deerskin.
With use, the deerskin molds to your hand, becoming softer and more comfortable, while the lacquer patterns develop a rich, elegant sheen. Koshu Inden pieces grow more beautiful the longer they are used. This collection makes a thoughtful gift for anyone born in the Year of the Ox, or for those whose work involves cattle.
