Discover Ikedaya Fukuoka Tenjin Store

Ikedaya Fukuoka Tenjin Store is our newest location, situated in the heart of Fukuoka City's Hakata Ward. Previously, we sold our randoseru (Japanese school backpacks) at a small shop inside Canal City Hakata.

In December 2022, we moved to our current store, which offers a larger space and a wider selection of products for visitors to explore.

The History of Fukuoka and Hakata

Kyushu is a great destination for anyone interested in the history of trade and cultural exchange in Asia. Fukuoka has long been a major international port city, centered around Hakata Port. Places like the Fukuoka City Museum and Hakata Port Bayside Museum offer insights into the region’s international connections.

A short train ride from central Fukuoka takes you to Dazaifu, home to the Kyushu National Museum. This museum highlights Japan’s ties with Asia and showcases centuries of cultural exchange.

Near the Ikedaya Fukuoka Tenjin Store, you can visit historic spots such as Kushida Shrine and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. Kushida Shrine is known for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, a tradition with over 700 years of history. At the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, you can see what life was like in the Meiji era and even try traditional Hakata weaving. Exploring these sites alongside the modern streets of Tenjin gives you a deeper view of Fukuoka’s character.

About the Tenjin and Daimyo Area

The store is a five-minute walk from Tenjin Station. Tenjin is one of Fukuoka’s busiest districts, full of shopping, food, and art. Next to it is the Daimyo area, once home to samurai residences. Today, Daimyo is a lively neighborhood known for unique cafés, small boutiques, and art galleries.

What You Will Find at Our Store

Colorful randoseru at Ikedaya

Our store displays colorful randoseru that can even be seen from outside the windows. Many travelers stop by after seeing the bags on display, and visitors are welcome to come in just to take a look or take photos.

Randoseru are sturdy backpacks traditionally used by Japanese elementary school students for six years. Today, they are also popular among adults as fashion items because of their durability and design. Usually, randoseru are made to order and require some time for delivery. However, we have ready-to-go items available for immediate purchase, perfect for international visitors. Feel free to ask our staff for details.

In addition to randoseru, we also carry a selection of simple and practical bags and wallets for adults, all carefully made in Japan.
