No Worries About the Rain: Waterproof Features of Ikedaya Randoseru

No Worries About the Rain: Waterproof Features of Ikedaya Randoseru

The rainy season in Japan is called tsuyu (written as 梅雨 in Japanese), using the characters for “plum”()and “rain”(). This is because it typically starts around the time plums begin to ripen. It usually lasts for several weeks, bringing steady rainfall and high humidity.

Hydrangeas during rainy season

In Japan, most elementary school students walk to school. It’s quite rare for children to be driven by their parents or take a school bus that stops near home. They carry all their supplies themselves and walk—rain or shine—with an umbrella in hand. That’s why a school bag that can handle rain is especially important.

When it rains, dealing with wet notebooks and school supplies can be a hassle once kids get to school or return home. But with an Ikedaya randoseru, that’s something you don’t need to worry about.

All Ikedaya randoseru are designed with excellent waterproofing. We carefully choose materials that perform well even in the rain and build each bag to keep water out. Whether it’s genuine leather or synthetic leather, every surface is treated with a water-repellent coating. If the bag gets wet, just wipe it with a soft cloth—no special cleaning products needed.

Designed to Keep Water Out

Waterproof frame inside the randoseru

Inside each randoseru is a waterproof frame made from resin. It helps stop water from leaking through the stitching and keeps the contents dry. Even if your child gets caught in a downpour, their books and papers will be safe.

Tested for Reliability

Lab testing waterproofing

We don’t just rely on design—we test our bags too. In one lab test, a randoseru was exposed to simulated rainfall of 10 mm per hour for one full hour. Even then, no water made it inside the bag.

Easy to Care For

Easy-to-clean surface

Thanks to its waterproof surface, an Ikedaya randoseru is easy to take care of. You can just wipe off dirt or water with a dry cloth—no need for sprays or creams.

Built for Japan’s Rainy Weather

Japan doesn’t just have a rainy season—it also experiences a typhoon season in late summer and early autumn. When strong storms or weather warnings are issued, schools may be closed for safety. Still, rain is common during this time of year, so school bags need to be ready for all kinds of wet weather. That’s why Ikedaya Randoseru have been designed with these conditions in mind.
