March’s zodiac “卯 (U)” — A Rabbit Motif That Brings the Feeling of Spring

March’s zodiac “卯 (U)” — A Rabbit Motif That Brings the Feeling of Spring

In Japan, an ancient calendrical system called the Junishi (Twelve Zodiac Signs) has long been used to represent years and months, as well as directions and even time of day.

This system originated in ancient China. It assigns an animal to each of twelve divisions and uses them symbolically to express the rhythm of the seasons and certain human characteristics.

March’s Junishi Sign Is “卯 (U)”
March’s Junishi sign is “卯 (U)”, which corresponds to the rabbit.

Rabbits are loved around the world as a motif often associated with lightness and positivity—much like the way they hop forward.

March is the season when the winter air begins to soften and plants gradually start to stir. In that sense, the image of “卯” overlaps with the quiet signs of new growth.

The Zodiac Character “卯”

The character “卯” is different from the everyday kanji for rabbit (兎). It is a character used specifically for the zodiac. These zodiac characters are often understood not as literal animal names, but as symbols that reflect seasonal progress and the state of nature.

Traditionally, “卯” has been described with images such as “a gate opening” or “things spreading outward”—a stage where what was closed begins to loosen and move outward.

It’s a character that fits March well, evoking an open, expanding feeling at the entrance to spring.

Ikedaya’s “卯” Pattern — Moon Rabbit Koshu Inden

At Ikedaya, we offer original Koshu Inden designs inspired by the Junishi (Twelve Zodiac Signs).

What is Koshu Inden?>> https://ikedaya-global.com/blogs/news/koshu-inden-a-beautiful-leather-craft-from-japanese-tradition-1

Ikedaya’s zodiac “卯” pattern is a charming design that combines a lightly hopping rabbit, a crescent moon, white clover, and a four-leaf clover.

Inden techniques were originally used to decorate samurai armor, and many traditional patterns carried talismanic meanings such as good fortune or protection from misfortune.

Ikedaya’s “卯” design is not a traditional motif, but some people—especially those born in the Year of the Rabbit—choose to carry it like a personal good-luck charm.

At our stores in Japan, we also carry many more Ikedaya-exclusive Koshu Inden zodiac items.

Koshu Inden is available at our Tokyo Shinjuku store, Shizuoka store (with the widest selection), and Hamamatsu store.

If you’re in the area, please feel free to stop by.
